Meet Our Team

We are an international group of designers, building scientists, educators and environmental performance consultants committed to providing intuitive, cutting-edge environmental analysis tools.

Timur Dogan
  • Senior Research Advisor

Timur is an Assistant Professor in the area of Building Technology and Environmental Systems as well as the head of the Sustainable Design Lab at Cornell AAP. To date, he has authored and co-authored several books, journal papers and peer reviewed scientific articles. Timur holds a doctorate in Building Technology from MIT and a Master in Design Studies from the Harvard Graduate School of Design and a Dipl. Ing. in Architecture with distinction from the Technical University Darmstadt, where he was a fellow of the German National Academic Foundation.

Alstan Jakubiec
  • Director of Engineering

Alstan is an Assistant Professor at the Singapore University of Technology and Design and holds a PhD in Building Technology from MIT. He also studied architectural design at the Georgia Institute of Technology and the University of Pennsylvania respectively. Alstan teaches the architectural energy systems course at SUTD and has taught taught courses in daylighting and sustainable design at the Harvard University Executive Education Program and at the Rhode Island School of Design. His expertise is in daylight and thermal modeling at building and urban scales, especially as it relates to the prediction of visual comfort.

Jeff Niemasz
  • VP of Operations

Jeff, VP of Operations, is a design consultant in Minneapolis, and a recent distinguished graduate of Harvard's Graduate School of Design. His interests include daylight and health, building simulations, computational design, and wood construction. Before embarking on a career in design, Jeff worked as an internist and holds a medical degree from the University of Chicago and completed his residency training at the University of Minnesota.

Christoph Reinhart
  • CEO

Christoph Reinhart is a building scientist and architectural educator working in the field of sustainable building design and environmental modeling. At MIT he is leading the Sustainable Design Lab, an inter-disciplinary group with a grounding in architecture that develops design workflows, planning tools and metrics to evaluate the environmental performance of buildings and neighborhoods. Products originating from the group – such as DIVA-for-Rhino, Mapdwell, DAYSIM and umi – are used in practice and education in over 90 countries. Before joining MIT, in 2012 Christoph led the G(SD)2 research group at Harvard University's Graduate School of Design. He holds a doctorate in architecture from the KIT in Karlsruhe.

Jon Sargent
  • VP of Product

Jon is an architectural designer and software developer based in San Francisco. As VP of Product for Solemma, Jon designs tools that help architects and consultants evaluate the daylight performance of their projects. His areas of focus include computational design, shading optimization, daylight simulation workflows, and data visualization. Prior to working full time on DIVA, Jon worked as a designer at Skidmore, Owings & Merrill in New York and San Francisco, where he applied data-driven methodologies to a number of award-winning international and supertall projects. Jon holds an M.Arch with distinction from Harvard’s Graduate School of Design.

Company History

DIVA-for-Rhino was originally developed by between 2009 and 2011 at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design – Sustainable Design (G(SD)2) research group. Early versions were used by Christoph Reinhart to teach building performance simulation concepts to architecture students and to promote the use of the computational tools during design. The initial development team consisted of Kera Lagios, Alstan Jakubiec, Jeff Niemasz, Christoph Reinhart and Jon Sargent. In 2012, the group formed Solemma LLC and secured an exclusive, non-expiring license from Harvard University to further develop DIVA-for-Rhino into a state-of-the-art commercial product. In addition to their work for Solemma, group members worked in architectural and lighting design firms as well as in research and education, contributing diverse perspectives to create a holistic user experience. In 2015, Timur Dogan joined Solemma after graduating from the Sustainable Design Lab at MT where he had developed a series of concepts for auto-generating robust, multi-zone thermal simulation models from Rhinoceros and Grasshopper. In 2016, the Archsim plug-in for EnergyPlus in Grasshopper was released as part of DIVA 4.
